David Mamet:

Glengarry Glen Ross

Directed by: Vito Taufer

Premiere: 16 December 2014

Description

Essayist, playwright, screenwriter and film director David Mamet, one of the best contemporary American authors, famous for a number of excellent plays such as Oleanna, American Buffalo, Sexual Perversity in Chicago, created his most important play – considered so even today – Glengarry Glen Ross in 1983. In 1984 it was performed in London and New York on the recommendation of Harold Pinter who thought very highly of it. It won Mamet a Pulitzer Prize, a Laurence Olivier Award for the best new play, the New York Critics Circle Award and a nomination for a Tony Award. In 1992 he adapted it into the screenplay for the critically-acclaimed film.

This unusual and cruel, yet extremely entertaining, play about the ruthless world of real-estate agencies, which thirty years later is illustrative of the Slovenian territory as well, testifies that Mamet is an excellent writer. The play is brim with precise, intelligent, sharp – at times vulgar – dialogue, full of sudden and unpredictable turns that pull the spectators from the world of realism into the very specific poetry of Mamet’s language.

So it is certainly not a coincidence that a virtuoso of theatre directing Vito Taufer has decided to engage in a dialogue with the grand master of world drama. All we have to do is wait (impatiently) to see how he, together with the actors and other collaborators, will show us the very topical political and psychopathological mechanisms in today’s (neo)liberal world, including Slovenia.
