Rainer Werner Fassbinder

Directed by: Alen Jelen

Co-production: Mladinsko Theatre and Radio Slovenia Third Channel

Première: June 2017

Rainer Werner Fassbinder didn’t live long, but managed to procure an extensive artistic opus in his thirty-seven years, be it as a director, screenwriter and actor in one person, which mostly narrates a single theme in many ways: about being foreign. If Fassbinder was something, he was an outsider. So it’s not unusual that in Katzelmacher, his film from 1969, he cast himself in the title role. Katzelmacher is a story for today’s needs. It tells us about a Greek economic migrant who tries to socialise himself in Munich, but encounters deaf ears, overt hostility and humiliation. The performance will use Fassbinder’s concept and apply it to the Slovenian context, to all the foreigners who have, ever since the disintegration of Yugoslavia, been trying to find their place within the borders of mother hen, but have been met with a cold shower instead of integration. Although the play won’t show the doors to anyone, it is primarily aimed at teenagers.
