Description
Nickel Stuff was created by Bernard-Marie Koltès as a script for a film, and will come to live on our stage under the direction of Ivica Buljan, who has staged the majority of Koltès’s works. In a London bar called Nickel, which is mostly used for dancing and where the majority of patrons are black, “dance duels” take place, similar to those from Saturday Night Fever (1977) which prompted Koltès to write, with the inspiration for the main character Tony Allen being John Travolta. The story begins when this relatively closed space of one minority group sees the arrival of another; their dance technique is based on different cultural patterns and ideas, so the dance floor becomes a “battlefield” for the groups. The performance will examine the social exclusion of minorities regarding their ethnic origin, political persuasion, social status, and sexual orientation. |
